Weld examination
Examining accessible weld volumes in fabrication or service where material and geometry are suitable.
PHASED ARRAY ULTRASONIC TESTING (PAUT)
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing uses an array of elements with timed excitation to steer and focus ultrasonic beams. Its scan displays help trained personnel assess indications within an agreed examination volume.
Request a PAUT proposalHOW THE METHOD WORKS
A PAUT setup defines probe, wedge, focal laws, beam angles, scan positions and calibration. Sectorial scans can show multiple angles in a cross-sectional view, while encoded scanning can link the ultrasonic data to distance along a weld or component. The technique and scan plan must demonstrate the coverage needed for the specified inspection objective.
WHERE IT MAY HELP
Examining accessible weld volumes in fabrication or service where material and geometry are suitable.
Investigating defined areas of piping and other industrial components.
Pairing PAUT with TOFD when different sound paths and indication responses are useful under the approved procedure.
Applications are illustrative. Suitability depends on the component and approved inspection procedure.
SCOPE DEVELOPMENT
Send available drawings or specifications with the details below. IAIS can use them to review coverage, calibration, site arrangements and reporting requirements.
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Beam coverage and resolution vary with the probe, material, geometry and chosen focal laws. Coarse-grained or highly attenuating material, surface condition and restricted access may limit effectiveness. Data interpretation and acceptance remain tied to the approved procedure.
PROJECT ENQUIRY
Share component drawings, applicable code or specification, location and schedule. The team will review the technical basis before proposing a method and execution plan.
